Sandy will remember those who lost their lives in World War I this weekend to mark the 100-year anniversary of the event.

There will be a commemorative service and a parade to mark the outbreak of the war on Sunday.

The parade will start in Swan Lane from 10:30am and go on to Sandy’s public war memorial on Bedford Road where a centenary plaque will be unveiled by Mr Colin Osborne, the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire.

It will then go on to St Swithun’s Church for a memorial service.

A commemorative exhibition will also be situated in Barclays Bank in Market Square where the 108 residents of Sandy who lost their lives will be remembered.

The exhbition will run until Saturday, August 16.

In addition to the parade, Sandy Royal British Legion will be taking part in ‘Lights Out’, a nationwide event encouraging the public to turn off their lights between 10 and 11pm on Monday.

The idea is to leave a single light on as a symbolic act of
reflection and hope.

Charles Byrne, Director of Fundraising at The Royal British Legion, said: “Our
vision is that over one million
candles will be lit across the UK, commemorating every Service man and woman who died during WWI.

“We hope to pass the torch of remembrance onto a younger generation ensuring there will always be a living legacy.”

The Legion will meet at the War Memorial on Bedford Road to remember more than a million Commonwealth Service personnel who lost their lives during World War I.

Members of the public are welcome to bring their own candles.
