High-flying GCSE students celebrated top grades at Sandy Upper School.

Staff arrived at the Engayne Avenue school to find groups of nervous youngsters waiting to see their grade slips on Thursday morning (August 23).

But the celebrations soon started when the students found out their results.

More than 66 per cent of students achieved five A* to C passes and 97 per cent gained at least one pass.

Thirty per cent of youngsters also achieved 10 or more passes at A* to C.

Christie Morrallee and Hannah Hinson, who are both 16 were among the school’s best performers.

Hannah was happy after achieving high grades in 12 subjects.

She said: “I got eight A*s and three As, as well as a BTEC in ICT so I’m really pleased.

“I’m looking forward to doing A-levels in maths, further maths, chemistry and physics.”

Christie, who achieved nine A*s and three As added: “I was happy with all of my grades but especially in German and English where I did better than I thought I would.

“I’m going on to do A-levels now and I want to be a history professor when I’m older.”

Jack Culbert, 15, of Sandy was delighted after achieving full marks in his music portfolio in one of his subjects.

He said: “My grades are two A*s, four As and four Bs and I got the highest mark you can get for my music compositions.”

Max Hurst, 16, who also lives in Sandy was also celebrating good grades including three As and seven Bs.

He said: “I worked hard on the revision so I’m pleased.”

Headteacher David Stevinson congratulated his hard-working students.

He said: “We have seen some incredibly good GCSE results.

“As well as Christie and Hannah we would also like to say a particular well done to Nicola Davies, Cassandra Coles and Sian Cahill.”
