College students will be creating an indoor garden at a national show.

The team from Shuttleworth College near Biggleswade will be taking on four rivals at the Ideal Home Show in London next year.

The garden will be set up on the show floor and will be judged by BBC presenter Alan Titchmarsh for the Ideal Young Gardeners of the Year competition.

The Prince of Wales has also visited the gardens and their young designers for the last two years.

Chris Campling, horticulture course manager at the college, said: “We have a team of seven students who will be putting the garden together for the show at Earls Court.

“We have taken part in the competition twice before and we previously won a bronze medal so we will be going for gold this time!”

The garden will have a cottage theme which the students – studying horticulture BTEC diplomas – will be designing their creation around.

Chris added: “There will most likely be a gate, a trellis, possibly a bridge and some herbaceous plants too.

“The main challenge will be setting up the garden on the show floor rather than outside where the entries have been previously.

“We will have to be very careful as there can be health risks when food and drink are being served not very far away.”

The students will need to submit their garden design before January 15.

They will then have a week to build and plant their garden before the opening day of the show, Friday, March 15.

David Domoney, competition organiser said: “It’s an absolute joy to see the colleges’ creative plans flourish and to witness the teams’ sense of achievement and pride.

“What a fantastic career platform this competition is to build upon for these budding young designers.”
