A dedicated volunteer has been given a second award to thank her for all her hard work.

Christine Bird of Arlesey has helped out the Dr Hadwen Trust for the last decade.

The non-animal medical research charity has named her its Volunteer of the Year for 2013.

Christine was also given the accolade of Volunteer of the Year in February 2012.

Christine, who lives in Lymans Road, said: “I was a bit surprised to win twice. I said ‘isn’t there anyone else?’ but they said I deserve it.

“I mostly do it for the animals. It’s doing my little bit and with everybody together we can make a difference.”

Christine has been helping with the Dr Hadwen Trust’s administration at its head office in Hitchin since 2004.

She first became involved with the charity by buying gifts from its Christmas catalogue. When the trust sent her a letter asking for more volunteers she decided to give it a go.

Christine spends two or three hours every Friday working for the trust.

Kay Miller, the charity’s group head of operations, said: “This award is our way of saying a massive thank you to her for giving up her time so selflessly this year.

“Christine really embodies what it takes to be a fantastic and committed volunteer.

“As a charity we work hard to make sure that everything we do makes the best use of every donation we receive.

“Christine’s regular volunteering commitment means that we can rely on her to manage specific projects, which then helps us to work towards delivering our charitable aim to replace animals used in medical research so that research is humane and human relevant.”

Christine added: “I would most definitely urge everyone to volunteer. Look around; there’s always something to suit you, even for just an hour.”
