The new year began with talk of more Gypsy and Traveller sites in Chronicle Country.

Central Beds Council’s local plan revealed that five more locations around Potton were being considered for future sites.

But as the year closed their future was still in doubt.

An inspector’s report on a nearby site indicated that the council had underestimated the need for pitches, meaning the council was forced to delay any decisions until 2014.

Stotfold’s Golden Girl Victoria Pendleton was awarded a CBE in the New Year honours list.

The cycling star took the gold in the women’s keirin and the silver in the women’s spring in the London 2012 Olympics.

Justice was finally served in January after a man pleaded guilty to a rape committed more than 20 years ago.

Daniel Borgers admitted the knifepoint attack that took place in Stotfold in October 1992. He was sentenced to seven and a half years in jail.

As January drew to a close, Central Beds Council and David Wilson homes promised that work on the Shortmead Street/Sun Street roundabout was due to start ‘very soon’.

In fact work did not begin until late August.
