Intimidation of bus passengers by drunks could be a thing of the past thanks to efforts by police and two councils.

Beds Police, Biggleswade Town Council and Central Beds Council are working together to combat the problem of alcoholics gathering at Biggleswade bus station.

Biggleswade council clerk Rob McGregor said: “There are a group of alcoholics who will often loiter around the men’s toilets at the bus station.

“They have been known to swear at passengers waiting for buses and also to beg for money, and this is something we are determined to stop.”

Councillor Brian Spurr, executive member for sustainable communities and services at Central Beds Council, said: “Our approach is to balance specialist support and education with any need for enforcement action.

“Our first priority is to make sure that the bus station is safe for people to use without feeling intimidated, but we are also very keen to help those individuals who have caused disruption get the support they need.”

A spokesman for Beds Police confirmed that regular foot patrols are being carried out around the bus station and market square.
