Put on your walking boots and prepare for the Starlight Hike.

The fundraising event in Moggerhanger will raise money for Sue Ryder and St John’s Hospice.

It consists of a six mile sponsored walk on Saturday, September 14.

Paula Chambers, staff nurse at St John’s Hospice, explained how she went the extra mile to help.

In late 2012 she welcomed Denise Sidwell to St John’s Hospice and they instantly hit it off. Denise was suffering severe pain from her lung cancer and was coming to the hospice for pain relief.

Paula said: “Denise was very private and a lady of very few words. She had beautiful blond hair that had been cut in anticipation of it falling out through treatment.

“Whilst Denise was a very strong character, she expressed distress at her hair falling out in clumps and quickly realised it would be better to shave her head - a very scary thought for women as we tend to be quite attached to our hair.”

Paula offered to have her hair shaved off at the same time to support her, as did Denise’s daughter, Luisa.

You can do your bit to help those at the hospice by taking part in the hike. Visit www.starlighthike.org or call 01767 642412.
