Town will care for open land if homes go ahead

The communal land and potential orchard on a proposed new housing estate will be run by the town council.

Members of Potton Town Council discussed whether they should accept responsibility for the land on the proposed Biggleswade Road development at their meeting on Tuesday evening (April 2).

Councillor Paul Rogers said: “I propose that we do accept it because if we don’t somebody else will get it and in 20 years’ time there will be houses on there. Do we want green spaces or not?”

The councillors voted to accept the proposal after it was seconded by Councillor Andy Hopkins.

The developers will give the council enough money to fund 10 years’ worth of maintenance, after which the town will have to pay for it. The main costs will be for grass cutting and litter picking.

Agent DH Barford and Co has now submitted an outline planning application for a mixed use development with 151 homes, employment premises, a site for a community hall, open space and new access.

One parking space will be provided per bedroom so a four bedroom house will have four parking spaces. Engineers have said that there will still be the same amount of parking availability for the existing Biggleswade Road residents, if not more.

Of the new homes 35 per cent will be affordable housing. It is expected bungalows will be built on the higher ground.

You can comment about the application online by visiting www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/PLANTECH/DCWebPages/AcolNetCGI.gov and searching for reference 13/00921. The consultation period is open until Monday, April 15.

The application will then be discussed by Central Beds Council and if it is approved a developer will take over the site and submit a detailed planning application.
